Pituitary Surgery

Throughout the human body, there are small glands that can have a major effect on our health and wellbeing. In fact, without those glands working properly, we are going to quickly realize just how important they are to our health. One of those glands is the Pituitary gland, a small gland that is located below the brain and above the nasal cavities. It may not be large in size but the hormones it produces have a profound effect on our body, including our growth and even our emotions. That is why problems with the pituitary are such a big issue.

Sometimes, it may become necessary for Pituitary Surgery to take place, and that is a very delicate procedure. One of the most common reasons why this type of surgery is necessary is if tumors form on the pituitary gland. They can begin to cause issues, including producing too much or too little hormones and in either case, it can cause severe symptoms. This is a problem that needs the care of a specialist and Dr. Dickerman is the choice to make in the Dallas area. Many people in Frisco and Mckinney choose his services because he is among the best to be found in the United States.

There are a number of different Pituitary Surgery procedures that may be considered. When tumors exist on the pituitary gland, however, the most common type of surgery is transsphenoidal surgery. This type of procedure is done through the nose or, more specifically, through the sphenoid sinus. This is the hollow area behind the nasal passages and below the brain so it gives easy access to the pituitary gland.

Pituitary gland tumors can be cancerous or benign. In either case, they can cause problems because of the effect they have on the secretion and production of hormones. Cancerous tumors, however, always are a cause for concern. With Pituitary Surgery, it may be possible to remove the tumors and the problem along with it. In other cases, it might be necessary to have radiation or other methods of treatment to completely remove the problem.

In some cases, it may be recommended that the entire pituitary gland be removed. If that is the case, radiation therapy may be necessary but it is not always needed because the tumors may not grow back, even if the tumor is not completely removed. If the entire tumor is removed, they radiation is not needed in most cases.

It is always a good idea to ensure that you take good care of your health. Dealing with pituitary tumors may be a very stressful problem, both physically and emotionally. The effect that the lack of hormones can have on the body can be devastating. In a similar way, too many hormones can also cause serious problems. If you suspect you have a need for Pituitary Surgery, be sure to contact the offices of Dr. Dickerman. He can help you by giving a proper diagnosis and making you aware of the possible solutions.
