Herniated Disc

The spine is a very intricate and complex part of the human body. It consists of a number of bone like objects that are known as vertebrae and they extend the entire way up the spinal canal and into the neck. The vertebrae do not touch each other but they act independently of each other in a rather remarkable way. They are held together with bony structures, ligaments and tendons. They are also separated from each other by a series of intervertebral discs. Those discs help to protect the vertebrae and they allow for the free movement of the spine.

Unfortunately, the discs can also be somewhat delicate and if they experience any type of trauma, then damage can occur. It is also true that discs can be damaged as a result of old age and they can dry out as we get older. Those issues often cause the interior of the disc, which is a jellylike substance, to protrude. This is a problem that is known as a herniated disc and it is perhaps one of the more serious and common issues that people experience with their spine.

One of the biggest problems with having a herniated disc is the possibility that it could rest on a nerve root. Anytime that the nerve experiences this type of intrusion it can lead to pain, numbness, tingling and a possibility for a number of other symptoms. The nerve root can even cause the pain and other symptoms to radiate down the arms or the legs, depending upon the area where the nerve is pinched. It is not something that should be left to heal on its own, as it is often necessary to have medical intervention by a physician.

If you are suffering from a herniated disc, it is important to seek medical attention. The payment may be associated with this problem can be both chronic and severe. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, many individuals with spine problems have sought the help of Dr. Dickerman. Something that many people don’t realize is the fact that herniated discs do not always cause a problem with spine pain. As a matter of fact, there are times in which these discs can herniate and they don’t come in contact with the nerve. It may still cause some problems in some way or another but pain is not typically one of them.

Spine problems can sideline you and they can result in issues that continue to be a problem for a very long time. Contact Dr. Dickerman if you are experiencing a problem with your back and he can assist you to get back on your feet again.
