10 Spinal Stabilization

The human spine has many responsibilities and when it is healthy, we don’t typically give it much thought. Once problems start to occur because we have damaged our spine or because it is degenerating as we get older, it is often foremost on her mind. After all, back problems are often chronic in nature and they can be life altering for those who suffer from them. The statistics show that most people will suffer back problems at some point in their life but at times, it may be necessary for medical intervention.

One of the options that may be considered if you have spinal problems is spinal stabilization surgery. This is not a single surgical procedure but rather, it refers to a number of different types of procedures that can bring about stability to the spinal column. The problem is, an unstable spine can cause a wide variety of issues, including the possibility for severe pain, numbness, tingling and weakness. At times, the spinal cord may be pinched and when that takes place, the issues can radiate out from that area to other parts of the body.

When you visit Dr. Dickerman, he will diagnose the problem you are experiencing. At first, a wide variety of nonsurgical treatment options may be considered for your condition. They could include physical therapy, spinal injections or medication. For some people, those nonsurgical options are enough to help them deal with the pain and other symptoms they are experiencing. At times, however, surgery may be necessary. Stabilizing the spine through surgery can help you to lead a life that is free of those problems and to move about without the pain that is often associated with back problems.

Spinal stabilization surgery may be performed for a number of different reasons. Some of the more common reasons why people need this type of surgery include spinal tumors, herniated discs, spinal deformities, spinal trauma and scoliosis. Depending upon the situation and the degree of damage, stabilization surgery may be considered. Prior to the time that it is considered, however, you may need to wear a brace and it could potentially help to shore up the spine and allow you to get back on your feet again.

If Dr. Dickerman recommends stabilization surgery, you will have to pay attention to the instructions both before and after the surgery has been completed. It may take some time for the bones in your spine to fuse together and continue to grow, so you may need to limit your activities significantly after the surgery takes place. Things such as lifting, twisting and bending are going to be off limits during that time. Of course, it really depends upon the type of surgery and this is something that Dr. Dickerman can discuss with you.

If you are suffering from a spine problem in Richardson, Plano or throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area, you can contact Dr. Dickerman for assistance. He has helped many people to get back on their feet again and he can help you as well.
