Lumbar Disc Arthroplasty

Arthroplasty is a type of surgical procedure that involves replacing or repairing a joint in the human body. When most of us think about this type of procedure, we may think about getting an artificial knee or perhaps having a hip replacement surgery completed. Those are examples of arthroplasty but they are not the only examples. For individuals who are having a difficulty with their spine, a lumbar disc arthroplasty may also be necessary. This is a certain type of surgical procedure that can go a long way in helping somebody who is experiencing a lot of spine pain to feel better again.

Many different issues can occur in the lumbar or lower spine and in fact, back pain is one of the most common reasons why people miss work. Sometimes, however, the issue goes beyond the temporary bouts of pain and becomes a chronic problem. That is the case with a disc that has become damaged in some way or another. Sometimes, it is a herniated disc that occurs because of misuse or an accident. Degenerative disc disease can also lead to a breakdown of the disc and eventually, can render them practically worthless.

Although there are a number of different surgical procedures that can be done to help correct the problem, one of the newer procedures that may be considered is a lumbar disc arthroplasty. Rather than trying to remove the part of the offending disc that is touching a nerve or perhaps doing a fusion surgery, this type of surgical procedure is a total disc replacement. It uses artificial disc technology and it can really make a difference in the life of somebody that has been dealing with severe spine pain for quite some time.

Choosing a Doctor

The first step in the process is to choose a physician that is not only qualified to perform this type of lumbar spine surgery, they are well-versed in how they do it properly. If you happen to live in the Dallas Metroplex, including cities such as Richardson, Bedford and prosper, you are fortunate enough to be near the offices of Dr. Rob Dickerman. He is more than just a board-certified spine & neurosurgeon, he is one of the leading doctors in his field and has won many awards to that end. By contacting his office, you are getting the process started of getting the best care you possibly could receive for your spine.

Like any type of surgical procedure, a lumbar disc arthroplasty needs to be cared for properly. The doctor will run a series of tests, including the possibility for the blood test, to determine if there is anything special that needs to be done prior to the surgery taking place or while the surgery is occurring. Dr. Rob Dickerman always uses the least invasive form of surgery possible when surgery is required. You can rest assured that he will help you to get back on your feet again and allow you to live a life that is relatively free of spine pain.
